President's Message

    Hello all,

Welcome all new and returning members, rental league players, spectators, and friends, to our 102nd year of curling at the Fort Rouge Curling Club! It is both a pleasure and an honour to represent you in my second term as president.

For obvious reasons, the past year and a half (since March 2020) has not been easy for anyone; the pandemic has affected all aspects of our lives. With respect to the Fort Rouge Curling Club specifically, our 100th season was cut short, and the 101st season will go down in history as a lost/cancelled season.

First and foremost, I must thank those that left their membership fees and/or donated to the Fort Rouge Curling Club in February 2021. The support that our club received is proof that the Fort Rouge Curling Club has the most loyal, most generous members of any curling club in the world. Clearly, Rougers love their club, and will go that extra mile to support it, even when going through their own hardships. THANK YOU.

Secondly, I must acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the Fort Rouge Board of Directors, which was made even more challenging and demanding since the club was shut down in late October 2020. Although there are many board accomplishments, I feel I must specifically acknowledge two. Considerable effort and determination was required by the board to provide membership refunds and complete the Sport Manitoba charitable tax receipt process. The board pulled together to complete this process in less than one month. The second accomplishment that deserves special acknowledgement is the work of the Financial Planning Committee of Eric Wallace, James Aiken (aka Jimaiken), Bill Buchanan and Randy Baraniuk. This group put in hundreds of hours developing a financial planning tool that will benefit our club for decades to come. The club has a much better understanding of its financial position thanks to the hard work of this group. We are very fortunate to have the board members that we do. In addition, I must sincerely thank past president Brad Mclean for his leadership and dedication to the club during his tenure as president.

With that said, the 102nd season is underway and it is great to be back curling at the Rouge! I am happy that the province has introduced regulations that have improved the safety of curlers and those that spend time inside our club and am pleased to see our members embrace these measures to ensure safe and continued operation of activities. Our club strives to follow provincial health guidelines and has taken measures that put the health and safety of our curlers, spectators and staff at the forefront of our operations.

We have an exciting and busy year ahead with a full schedule and several special events. I know that our dedicated staff (Jeff Hodge, Manager; Head Ice Maker, Churchy; as well as bar staff and cleaners) is ready for all challenges and will maintain the consistently high level of service we are accustomed to when curling, eating, drinking and spectating at our club.

I would also like to welcome Pizza Place, our new tenant, who has leased our café for the 2021 season. I have fond memories of all-you-can-eat-spaghetti back when Pizza Place was operating at Grant Park and I am looking forward to the day that all-you-can-eat spaghetti comes to the Rouge (we can hope anyway).

Finally, we are still hoping to hold a few fun events this season to commemorate our 100th season (as several were cancelled), and, if you have not already done so, please pick up a copy of Don MacDonell’s best-selling book titled “1919-2019 100 Years of Friendly Curling” written to commemorate the Rouge’s 100 year history. I encourage you to take part in these upcoming events, and to purchase a book, as each of you have contributed to the history and success of our club.

In closing, on behalf of the board of directors and staff I would like to thank you all for your continued support of the club. I look forward to serving as the 2021/2022 President and to an exciting year here at the Rouge.

    Cam Barth
