President's Message

Welcome to our new and returning members to the Fort Rouge Curling Club as we all enjoy safe and healthy competition having fun this season. We also welcome all of our rental leagues and friends of the Rouge and thank you for your continued support with your use and enjoyment of our facilities. All of you are the keys to our success going forward. On behalf of our Board of Directors, it is a pleasure to represent you in my term as your President.

Our past and present board members, our hard-working staff and our dedicated volunteers accept the challenge you give us by constantly working toward preserving and improving upon our success as a club. Believe me when I say we are not complacent about that success.

Certainly the highlight for us last season was hosting the 2019 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships which saw 14 teams from across Canada compete here at the Fort Rouge. Congratulations to Team Manitoba (Colin Kurz, Megan Walter, Brendan Bilawka, Sara Oliver) on winning the event!

In recent years we have upgraded our ice making equipment, our rocks, our ice barn, our main floor, our lounge, and our kitchen. We also installed new systems and equipment such as a security system, ice cameras with viewing screens in our main floor and lounge, and LED lighting in our ice barn to reduce energy usage. At the present time, we’re underway on our second successive ten year Capital Improvement Plan.

This off-season the improvements continued with the replacement of the circa-1960’s ice plant electrical system. This new electrical system increases the stability of our ice plant and also allows us to adjust temperature settings and run-time remotely, which will result in reduced energy costs.

As we celebrate 100 years of curling at the Fort Rouge in 2019, I look forward to several great events such as the Centennial Bonspiel in November as well as a special event planned for the Spring, 2020.

We are proud to be hosting several great competitive events this season at the Rouge, including the Curl Manitoba Club play-downs, Masters Berth Bonspiel, KKP Classic MCT Bonspiel, Bad Boy Spiel, and the Fort Garry Brewing Spring Mixed Spiel. We also are to host many corporate and family events such as the Civic Employees Bonspiel and the North South Consultants funspiel, to name a few. As we look forward to another Manitoba Open Bonspiel in 2020, I’m reminded that the number of Fort Rouge teams registered last year was second to none.

I would like to recognize and celebrate the continued hard work and dedication of our current and past board members, our Past Presidents, our terrific Head Ice Technician Craig White and his staff, our remarkable cafe staff led by Brigette, our friendly and efficient lounge staff, and most certainly our Manager, Jeff Hodge. We’re fortunate to have such great staff and volunteers looking after our members.

In summary, there’s no doubt that the capital improvements to our building, first-class ice conditions, and great events, make for one great experience whenever you join your friends to curl or cheer at the Rouge. That’s the experience we want to keep going as we move toward our next hundred years.

Please enjoy a safe and happy season with us at the Fort Rouge Curling Club “The Home of Friendly Curling”!
